Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a boy named Shepherd. His life was mostly untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was essentially to care for his herd of sheep.

Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales across the solo tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his charges imbued in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.

However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous scheme.

Tales of predators hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a trick on the villagers.

One morning he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to help but discovered no beast.

The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick persisted for a few days more. However, here one day, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
